Norway Spruce (Picea abies) A fast-growing, Non Native, it reaches 40 to 60 feet tall, features dark green needles with sweeping, drooping branches, and is widely planted for windbreaks, privacy screens, and landscape accents.
Details:
- Hardiness: Fully cold-hardy down to -40°F (USDA Zones 3–7).
- Growth Rate: Fast, adding 1 to 2 feet of growth per year when young.
- Soil Requirements: Highly adaptable, tolerating heavy Minnesota clay-loams as well as loamy or sandy conditions.
- Sunlight: Best performance occurs in full sun (6+ hours daily).
- Deer Resistance: High; deer tend to avoid browsing mature Norway spruce due to the stiff, sharp needles.
- Spacing: Space trees 12 to 15 feet apart when creating a functional windbreak or privacy row.
